In the heart of the Mediterranean Sea
When you are planning a holiday in the province of Reggio Calabria it is natural to think of the sea and the sunny beaches, but the province of Reggio is also known for the beauty of its mountains, in particularly the Aspromonte.
This mountainous area covers more than a third of the entire province, and its highest point is Montalto at 1956 metres. From the peak you can enjoy a view at 360° which includes the Ionian coast as well as the Tyrrhenian one, and the Straits of Messina.
The Aspromonte is full of surprises: there is an abundance of water, a wealth of flora and fauna; many trekking paths; places like Gambarie that provide winter sport facilities; picturesque contrasts between the sea and the mountain; reminders of Garibaldi's feats. There is also the folklore, based on century-old traditions, the variety of its landscape; more rigid on the Tyrrhenian side and the Ionian side that becomes dry during the summer but regains its greenness in the autumn.
The Aspromonte can also be identified by its minority languages, such as the Greek dialect spoken in an area of the mountain that is at the extreme south of the Ionian. Here the “Calabrian Greeks” had looked for isolated and safe spots where their language could survive together with their way of life. Lastly the Aspromonte means a colourful handcraft tradition and interesting gastronomic proposals.
